What is Progressive Overload?
Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on the body during training. It is the single most important principle for building muscle and strength.
Methods of Progression
Overload doesn't only mean adding weight. You can progress through: increasing reps, adding sets, reducing rest periods, improving tempo, or increasing range of motion.
The RPE-Based Approach
Modern programming uses RPE on a 1-10 scale. Training at RPE 7-8 for most working sets ensures you're challenging the muscle while maintaining adequate recovery capacity.
Volume Landmarks
Research identifies key volume thresholds: MV (Maintenance), MEV (Minimum Effective), MAV (Maximum Adaptive), and MRV (Maximum Recoverable Volume). AI coaching keeps you in the MAV zone.
Deload: The Secret Weapon
Every 4-6 weeks, a planned deload (reducing volume by 40% and intensity by 20%) allows accumulated fatigue to dissipate. This sets the stage for the next block of progression.
